Arunachal Pradesh and Assam will organize committees to settle border disputes

For the purpose of settling boundary issues, Arunachal Pradesh and Assam have resolved to form district-level committees. The strategy used in Guwahati on Wednesday by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and his Arunachal Pradesh colleague Pema Khandu was similar to the one used by Assam and Meghalaya to partially resolve their differences. In the border districts, stakeholder committees will be established.

“The committees would conduct joint surveys in the contested regions in order to arrive at a concrete solution in a timely manner,” Mr. Sarma said following the meeting. He stated the answer will be based on historical perspective, ethnicity, proximity, the will of the people, and the administrative convenience of both states.

Arunachal CM termed the meeting Fruitfully

Mr. Khandu stated that the committees’ terms of reference were finalized at the ‘fruitful’ meeting. “The good excitement on all sides for a conclusion is quite promising,” he remarked. Along their 804-kilometer border, the two countries have around 1,200 disputed locations. The issues extend back to 1972 when Arunachal Pradesh was formed.
