The BJP becomes the first party since 1988 to achieve a century in the Rajya Sabha

BJP @ 100: The results of the 13 Rajya Sabha seats that went to the polls on March 31 have created a sort of record for the Upper House, with the BJP breaking the double-digit barrier and now having 101 members in the House, a first since the Congress held that honor from 1988 to 1990.

The Bhartiya Janta Party had 97 seats before the election, but one seat each in Himachal Pradesh, Tripura, Nagaland, and Assam has propelled it into the 100-seat club. The National Democratic Alliance, led by the BJP, now has 117 members in the 245-member House, including the “extra seat” from Assam, which was won by the BJP and its ally, the United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL), late on Thursday evening after cross-voting. The Lok Sabha currently has 236 members and nine vacancies.

72 members are stepping down

In fact, 72 Rajya Sabha members retired on Thursday, and elections for the remaining 62 seats will be held in the months ahead. Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Rajasthan, Bihar, Karnataka, Odisha, and Madhya Pradesh are among the states where these seats will be fought.

The BJP presently owns 30 of the remaining 62 seats and is hopeful of getting more, although they may lose several in states where opposition parties have gained power.

Prior to 2014, the BJP’s greatest ever total was 47 seats in the 2012-13 election cycle, which it gradually improved upon once Prime Minister Narendra Modi took power.

29 seats for Congress

Congress, on the other hand, has reached a new low of 29 seats. For the first time in decades, no Akali Dal member will be elected to the Rajya Sabha, and only one BSP member will be elected, with two of the three BSP MPs retiring in July.

BJP tweeted the celebratory moment

The BJP was quick to celebrate, with Amit Malviya, the convenor of the party’s information technology department, tweeting the news: “Both Rajya Sabha seats in Assam are won by the BJP and its allies. The Bhartiya Janta Party also won the remaining two seats in the North East, Tripura, and Nagaland. This gives it a 4/4 score. The United States Congress has drawn a clear line in the sand. In the Rajya Sabha, the Bhartiya Janta Party now has 100 members. There hasn’t been a political party since 1988.”
