Children under the age of 4 must wear a helmet

All children under the age of four who ride pillions on a two-wheeler will be required to wear a safety belt and helmet in a year. On February 15, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways published a notification amending the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989, to make the two safety devices mandatory for children aged nine months to four years. One year after the announcement, the new rule takes effect.

Everyone over the age of four must wear protective headgear when riding a two-wheeler, according to the laws. A youngster under the age of 14 must be restrained in a car by a seatbelt or a child restraint device.

According to the notification, the safety harness will include a vest for the youngster and a strap for the driver. The most recent revision also limits the speed of two-wheelers transporting such children to 40 kilometers per hour. In 2020, more than 2,700 children under the age of 14 and over 14,000 youngsters under the age of 18 died in traffic accidents. According to government statistics, 5,868 persons died near schools or educational facilities.

“The road is full of unknowns, and children are frequently exposed to many threats while going to school, in private vehicles, on foot, and on public transportation.” Accidental injury is the leading cause of death among children, and the most common cause of unintentional injury is generally traffic crashes.

Harness and child helmets will improve child road safety

Harnesses, child helmets, and reduced speed restrictions for kids are all part of new regulations aimed at improving child road safety. “However, proper execution of the law is necessary to save the lives of children across the country,” said Piyush Tewari, the SaveLIFE Foundation’s Founder and CEO.
