India at UNSC meeting on Russia-Ukraine crisis: de-escalation and civilian safety paramount

During a meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday, India said that the rise in tensions between Ukraine and Russia is a “matter of deep concern.” These developments could have an impact on peace and security in the area. India told the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) that the first thing that should be done is to calm down the Russia-Ukraine crisis.

De-escalation must be the top priority: India

Ukraine and the Russian Federation are getting angrier at each other. This is very upsetting. There is a chance that these changes could harm the peace and security of the region. India’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, T S Tirumurti, said that at a meeting of the UNSC on Tuesday.

Allow time for the recent efforts made by groups that want to ease tensions. It’s good that there are so many efforts going on right now, like through the Trilateral Contact Group and the Normandy format. We need Parties to do more to bridge the gap between different interests. Tirumurti said that we can’t afford to have a war.

Tuesday was an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council. On Monday, Vladimir Putin said that two separatist regions in eastern Ukraine were now independent.

The country also said that it was worried about the safety and security of civilians. In order for people to be safe, they need to be protected. People from India live and study in many parts of Ukraine. They also live and work near the border. To us, Indians’ well-being is very important.

The Indian government asked all sides to step up their diplomatic efforts to find a peaceful solution at the earliest opportunity. Our final statement is this: “We stress the need for all parties to exercise the utmost restraint, as well as to step up their diplomatic efforts so that a mutually agreeable solution can be reached as soon as possible,” Tirumurti said.
