Rwanda reopened its border with Uganda after 2 years

The African country Rwanda has reopened its international border with Uganda. This border was closed since 2019. The decision to reopen the border is being made after a series of discussions and assurance from both nations to each other to resolve the issues between them. On Thursday, the Foreign affairs of Rwanda released a statement that the Gatuna border between Rwanda and Uganda will be reopened from January 31.

The statement of the foreign ministry of Rwanda said that visit to Rwanda from Uganda Representative ensures that there is a process to solves the issues raised by Rwanda and commitments were made by the Government of Uganda to address the remaining Obstacles.

The actual statement is as follows: “following the visit to Rwanda of Lt Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, Senior Presidential Advisor on Special Operations and Commander of Land Forces of the Uganda People’s Defence forces (U9PDF) on January 22nd, 2022, the Government of Rwanda has taken note that there is a process to solves issues raised by Rwanda, as well as commitments made by the Government of Uganda to address remaining obstacles. “

Uganda is yet to respond officially

However, it is important to note that Uganda has made no official response to this press statement released by Rwanda. However, their Ambassador to the UN said on Twitter that this step means a lot to the people of both nations. He also congratulated both nations to take such a crucial step in order to restore the strong bilateral ties between the two countries.
