Following Monday’s ‘2+2’ event, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met with US Trade Representative Katherine Tai and Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo to continue his engagement with the Biden administration.
Mr. Jaishankar and Ms. Tai discussed the ramifications of the Russia-Ukraine war on global commerce and the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework, according to a readout from the US Government (a framework, proposed by the Biden administration, for economic cooperation in the region, on issues such as emerging technologies and supply chains).
Jaishankar discusses the trade policy
The two Ministers agreed that the Trade Policy Forum, which was re-launched in November 2021 after a four-year hiatus, held “great promise” in terms of lowering trade barriers, notably in agricultural goods. Last year’s meeting resulted in market access for Indian mangoes and pomegranates in the United States, as well as pork, pork products, alfalfa hay, and cherries in India.
Mr. Jaishankar said he and Ms. Raimondo discussed accelerating the economic collaboration during their discussion.
“Our goal is to improve supply chain resilience and reliability, as well as trust and transparency in business,” he tweeted. Later on Tuesday afternoon, Mr. Jaishankar and his American counterpart, Secretary of State Antony Blinken, attended an interactive engagement with students at Howard University.
