The 28th of February is National Science Day

On February 28, National Science Day (NSD) will be held to honor Sir Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman’s discovery of the Raman Effect. In the year 1930, he was awarded the Nobel Prize for this discovery. The day is commemorated to honor the contributions of scientists to the advancement of our country and the globe as a whole. It’s utilized to raise awareness of science’s function in society. ‘Future of STI: Impact on Education Skills and Work’ is the theme for National Science Day 2021.

On the occasion of National Science Day, the Gandhi Institute of Technology and Management (GITAM) in Hyderabad is hosting an “All India Essay Contest on Science and Technology.” Life in Covid-19, Online Teaching: Benefits and Limitations, and Social Ethics, Morals, and Values are the topics.

While working in the laboratory of the Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science in Kolkata, CV Raman discovered the Raman Effect. CV Raman received the coveted Nobel Prize in Physics for his discovery.

To honor the renowned scientist, India has commemorated this day as National Science Day since 1987. Students should be aware of the following information regarding CV Raman and the National Science Day celebrations:

  • In 1954, CV Raman was awarded the highest civilian honor in India, the Bharat Ratna.
  • He won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1930 for “work on light scattering and the discovery of the effect named after him.”
  • The purpose of National Science Day is to raise public awareness about the value of science and its applications.
  • The National Council for Science and Technology Communication (NCSTC) petitioned the Indian government to proclaim February 28 as National Science Day in 1986.
  • On February 28, 1987, the first National Science Day was observed. ‘Integrated Approach in Science and Technology for a Sustainable Future’ is the subject of National Science Day 2022.
  • The Department of Science and Technology’s National Council for Science and Technology Communication (NCSTC) is the main organization for supporting and coordinating National Science Day celebrations around the country, notably at scientific institutes and research facilities.
  • Public speeches, radio and television shows, science movies, science displays on themes and concepts, debates, quiz competitions, lectures, and science model exhibitions are all held to commemorate National Science Day.
