The first Gati Shakti cargo terminal in India was inaugurated on the Eastern Railway’s Asansol Division

The Asansol Division of Indian Railways has successfully commissioned private siding of Maithan Power Limited at Thaparnagar, Jharkhand, in accordance with the Prime Minister’s vision “Gati Shakti” and the Ministry of Railways’ policy regarding the “Gati Shakti Multi-Modal Cargo Terminal” (GCT), informed the Ministry of Railways on Thursday.

Chairman and CEO of the Railway Board, V K Tripathi, said at the GCT’s commissioning, “The Maithan Power Project was commenced in the year 2009, and power generation began in the year 2011.” The coal needed for the power plant was delivered via road, which is estimated to yield 120 inbound coal rakes every month. Also expected to be handled from the siding are two to four outward rakes of Fly Ash. This will increase the railways’ monthly earnings by almost Rs. 11 crores.”

Gati Shakti will make railways’ future prospects strong

The siding is in close proximity to industrial and mining areas, and its future prospects are strong. Tripathi stated that the Indian Railways is committed to bringing PM Gati Shakti’s vision to fruition.

“Rail transportation is beneficial to the economy since it is the most energy-efficient and cost-effective means of transportation. The commissioning of this port, as well as other similar terminals, will have a significant positive impact on the nation’s economy,” he noted.

He went on to say that this is the first GCT to be commissioned in Indian Railways since the policy was published in December 2021.

PM Gati Shakti is a Prime Minister’s initiative aiming at coordinating infrastructure projects across all key infrastructure ministries, including railways, roads, waterways, and aviation, for the design and execution of national infrastructure projects including all state governments.
