Sri Lanka: On Tuesday, a supply of 11,000 MT of rice arrived from India to aid the country’s economic problems. The traditional national new year is observed by Sri Lankans. On April 13 and 14, Sri Lankans will celebrate the Sinhala and Tamil New Year. This is one of Sri Lanka’s most important celebrations.
According to an Indian High Commission announcement, a shipment of rice from India arrived in Colombo on board a ship ahead of the Sri Lankan people’s New Year celebrations. Sri Lanka is in the midst of its biggest economic crisis since its 1948 independence from the United Kingdom.
India has delivered 16000 MT rice to Sri Lanka
“In the last week alone, India has delivered 16,000 MT rice to Sri Lanka as part of its multi-pronged help,” the statement stated. These shipments, which symbolize India’s particular relationship with Sri Lanka, will continue, according to the Indian High Commission.
Following a $500 billion line of credit announced in February, India recently extended a $1 billion line of credit to Sri Lanka as part of its financial support to the country to help it deal with the economic crisis. Indian credit lines to boost reserves and imports of basics have given the economy a short reprieve. People in the country are suffering from a lack of basic necessities and are forced to work long hours due to power outages.
While street protests around the island call for President Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s resignation for mishandling the economic crisis, the administration has only begun the process of seeking a bailout from the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
