DDU-GKY: Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Grameen Kaushalya Yojana

Shri Nagendra Nath Sinha, Union Rural Development Secretary, convened a webinar today (10 March 2022) to promote the ‘Captive Employer’ concept under the Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Grameen Kaushalya Yojana (DDU-GKY). More than 16 Sector Skill Councils took part in today’s webinar, which also drew in more than 180 stakeholders. To mark the 75th anniversary of India’s independence, alumni gatherings were held around the country under the Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Kaushalya Yojana (DDU-GKY).

About DDU-GKY

The Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Grameen Kaushalya Yojana (DDU-GKY) is a nationwide placement-linked skill training program supported by the Ministry of Rural Development (MoRD), Government of India. It was launched on September 25, 2014. (GoI). DDUGKY aims to improve the poor rural youth’s job-related abilities and position them in wage jobs in various sectors of the economy. The program is outcome-driven, with at least 70% of trained candidates promised placement, and it is aiming toward minimum necessary certification.

The DDU-GKY program, which focuses on placements, is being implemented in 27 states and three UTs for rural disadvantaged kids. Through more than 2381 training centers, more than 871 Project Implementation Agencies (PIAs) train rural disadvantaged kids in close to 611 employment roles. Till January 31, 2022, a total of 11.44 lakh youth have been trained and 7.15 lakh youth have been placed.

  • It was declared on Antyodaya Diwas in 2014 by the Ministry of Rural Development (MoRD).
  • It is a National Rural Livelihood Mission-led demand-driven placement-linked skill training initiative (NRLM).
  • It employs skill training and job placement as a means of diversifying income and enabling persistent upward mobility out of poverty.

Beneficiaries

  • DDU-GKY is a program that focuses on rural children aged 15 to 35 who come from low-income homes.

Objective

  • Increasing the economic diversity of rural impoverished families
  • Pay attention to the desires of rural youngsters in terms of careers.

Alumni Gathering

  • The scheme includes a key component: alumni gatherings.
  • The Alumni meetings provide a safe environment for previous trainees to share their experiences with current trainees on themes such as placements, career aspirations, obstacles they had in finding work prior to starting the training, and the benefits they received afterward.
  • Former trainees are also recognized at the ceremonies for their outstanding achievements at their places of employment.

Coverage

  • The program is now being implemented in 27 states and three union territories, with over 2198 Training Centers in 1822 projects and 839 Project Implementing Agencies providing training in 56 industries and 600 job categories. 

Achievements

  • Since the program’s commencement, a total of 10.81 lakh candidates have been taught in 56 industries and 600 trades, with 6.92 lakh of them being placed.

Significance

  • For better success in skilling and placing rural youth, DDU-GKY and integrated farming projects for rural development across the country are critical.
  • Through skilling, DDU-GKY has played a vital role in the framework of Atmanirbhar Bharat.
  • It plays an important role in promoting social and economic projects as part of the Skill India campaign.
