The Rajya Sabha has approved a bill to alter Jharkhand’s SC list

Rajya Sabha: The Constitution (Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes) Order (Amendment) Bill, 2022, was approved by the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday, removing the Bhogta caste from the list of Scheduled Castes (SCs) and adding more communities to the list. Instead, the Bhogta caste will be classified as one of the state’s Scheduled Tribes.

Rajya Sabha approved a revised list of Jharkhand

Based on requests from the states, the government continues to revise the lists first published in 1950. The Bill also alters the Scheduled Tribes Order’s schedule to add the Deshwari, Ganjhu, Dautalbandi (Dwalbandi), Patbandi, Raut, Maajhia, Khairi (Kheri), Tamaria (Tamadia), and Puran communities to Jharkhand’s Scheduled Tribes list.

Arjun Munda, the Minister of Tribal Affairs, told the House that similar amendments would be proposed for other states as well. “For Arunachal Pradesh and Karnataka, we made [such revisions].” It is now being done in Uttar Pradesh, Tripura, and Jharkhand. Odisha is the subject of our investigation. We finished the work in Chhattisgarh, but we’re still working on certain observations from the Law Ministry,” he explained.

The bill also aims to assist people in maximizing the benefits of reservation provisions in education and government positions.
