Vladimir Chizhov, Russia’s Ambassador to the European Union, has denied that his country is planning an invasion of Ukraine. According to the New York Times, Moscow is considering this Wednesday (February 16) as a date for military action in Ukraine, which Chizhov refuted in comments published in the German publication Die Welt.
What did Russia’s EU Ambassador say?
“As far as Russia is concerned,” Chizhov told Die Welt, “I can tell you that there will be no strike on Wednesday.” “There will be no escalation in the coming week, the following week, or the following month.” “In Europe, wars rarely begin on a Wednesday,” Chizhov continued.
In December, Moscow’s envoy to Brussels made similar remarks. Since then, US officials have stated that their intelligence indicates that Russia may be contemplating an attack on Ukraine before the Winter Olympics conclude on February 20.
‘Where is the proof, then?
Chizhov slammed the United States’ claims of a future invasion of Ukraine. “You have an obligation to give evidence when you make claims, especially severe allegations against Russia.” “If not, it’s defamation,” Russian Ambassador explained.
“So, where’s the proof?” Chizhov was the one who inquired. “When our allies eventually listen to our legitimate worries, a period of detente will not take long in arriving,” he said, urging the West to take Russia’s security concerns seriously. “This would be in the best interests of all Europeans from Lisbon to Vladivostok, as well as all other nations throughout the world,” he continued.
Russia has requested that NATO limit its activity in Eastern Europe and agree not to admit Ukraine to the organization. A restriction on deploying weapons systems outside of Russia’s borders has also been urged by the Kremlin.
