Syria claims Israel launched a missile attack near the Golan Heights

Israel launched four surface-to-surface missiles early Wednesday at Syrian military positions in the country’s south, causing material damage, according to official media. According to State TV, the missiles were launched from Israeli-occupied Golan Heights and impacted regions surrounding the adjacent town of Quneitra. According to the statement, the attack occurred just after midnight and resulted in material damage but no casualties.

Syria reported a similar attack last week

The incident happened about a week after the country’s state media reported a similar Israeli missile attack on an area south of Damascus, which likewise resulted in no injuries. Israel made no statement in response to the attack. It has carried out hundreds of strikes against targets inside Syrian government-controlled areas throughout the course of the country’s decade-long civil war, but seldom admits or discusses such operations.

Israel has admitted, however, that it attacks the sites of Iran-aligned forces, such as Lebanon’s Hezbollah, which fights on President Bashar Assad’s side. Israel took the Golan Heights from Syria during the 1967 Middle East conflict and annexed the territory later that year. Although the Trump administration declared the territory to be part of Israel, the majority of the world does not acknowledge the annexation.
