Tirumurti tells the UN Security Council that India is willing to assist trapped neighbours in Ukraine

T.S. Tirumurti, India’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations (UNPR), expressed worry over the escalating humanitarian catastrophe in Ukraine, saying that the events at the Ukraine border had impeded India’s evacuation attempts. Mr. Tirumurti also offered evacuation aid to citizens of developing countries and India’s neighbours stranded in Ukraine.

The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) gathered in a special session to vote on a resolution asking for Russia’s departure from Ukraine, while the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) met to discuss the region’s humanitarian catastrophe.

“The changes on the ground at the border crossings have had a negative influence on our evacuation efforts,” he added, notifying the Security Council of the Government’s intention to dispatch Ministers to oversee evacuation efforts in neighbouring European nations.

Tirumurti said India will supply humanitarian supplies to Ukraine

Mr. Tirumurti informed the Security Council that the Government would be sending humanitarian supplies to Ukraine on March 1 and that top Ministers would be visiting Ukraine’s neighbours to discuss the entrance of Indian residents. On Feb. 28, Ministry of External Affairs Spokesperson Arindam Bagchi announced medical and other aid to Ukraine, as well as the fact that several Ministers will be coming to Europe to monitor the activities.

Mr. Bagchi said on Monday that just about 1,400 Indian people had been sent back to India on six evacuation planes. India has routinely abstained from voting on measures linked to the Russia-Ukraine crisis in recent weeks.
