Enforcement Directorate conducts a search of the Nagpur residence of a lawyer who filed petitions against Devendra Fadnavis in 2017

On Thursday, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) searched the home of a lawyer who has filed multiple petitions against senior BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis in recent years. Around 6 a.m., the Enforcement Directorate began examining Nagpur-based lawyer Satish Uke’s home, as well as land deals.

Mr. Uke is well-known for being twice charged with criminal contempt by the Bombay High Court. He was ordered to forfeit 1 lakh of the 2 lakh he had placed in a criminal contempt case by the Nagpur Bench of the High Court in February 2017. “There is a definite, purposeful, determined, and calculated attempt on Satish Uke’s side, which is discernible to drag down the image of the judiciary in the eyes of the public,” the court said.

Mr. Uke filed a suit with the Bombay High Court’s Nagpur Bench and then the Supreme Court in July 2017 seeking Mr. Fadnavis’ disqualification as a legislator for allegedly failing to disclose two criminal cases (forgery and cheating) against him in his 2014 election affidavit.

Mr. Uke said in his declaration filed before the polls that Mr. Fadnavis concealed this information. According to the Representation of the People Act, supplying false information or concealing information is a crime punishable by up to six months in prison, a fine, or both.

He has also filed a petition for the death of Sessions Judge B.H. Loya, who was presiding over the trial in the Sohrabuddin Shaikh alleged fake encounter case and died in Nagpur in 2014, apparently of a heart attack. Mr. Uke’s petition had asked for a police investigation into the death and had named Mr. Fadnavis and BJP leader Amit Shah as party members.
