Gotabaya Rajapaksa invites all parties to Cabinet to discuss solutions

All parties in Parliament have been urged to take cabinet seats and work with President Gotabaya Rajapaksa to find solutions to Sri Lanka’s economic dilemma.

Mr. Rajapaksa has sought remedies “within a democratic framework,” according to his administration, blaming the situation on “many economic issues and global trends.”

His message comes a day after the Cabinet of Sri Lanka resigned en masse, escalating anti-government protests in the face of a worsening economic crisis characterized by debilitating shortages and protracted power outages. Hundreds of protesters have been protesting nonstop, even breaching a curfew this weekend, to demand that the President and his government resign. Mr. Gotabaya Rajapaksa and Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa continue in office despite the resignation of all Cabinet ministers, including three Rajapaksas.

Earlier Sri Lanka’s Cabinet sent a resignation to Gotabaya

All of Sri Lanka’s cabinet ministers resigned late Sunday, amid violent public protests demanding that the Rajapaksa administration resigns for “failed” the country in its crisis response. They handed in their resignations to Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa, who would see President Gotabaya Rajapaksa on Monday morning, according to Leader of the House Dinesh Gunawardena. This allows President Gotabaya to create a new Cabinet, despite coalition allies’ calls for a “caretaker government.”

Three members of the ruling family, Irrigation Minister Chamal Rajapaksa and Finance Minister Basil Rajapaksa, as well as Sports Minister Namal Rajapaksa, were among the first to resign after a heated conversation between Prime Minister Mahinda and Cabinet members, informed sources stated.
