Unhallmarked jewelry can be checked at Assaying and Hallmarking Centres

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has now made provision for a common consumer to have the purity of their un hallmarked gold jewelry tested at any of the BIS recognized Assaying and Hallmarking Centres, following the successful implementation of Mandatory Hallmarking, where 3 lakh gold articles are hallmarked with HUID every day (AHCs).

On a priority basis, the AHC will test gold jewelry from ordinary customers and send a test report to the consumer. The consumer will be reassured about the purity of their jewelry by the test result, which will also be valuable if the consumer chooses to sell the jewelry he owns. The cost of testing up to four pieces of gold jewelry is Rs 200. The rates for 5 or more articles are Rs 45 per piece.

The home page of the BIS website, www.bis.gov.in, has thorough rules on consumer gold jewelry testing as well as a list of recognized Assaying and Hallmarking centers. Consumers can also check the authenticity and purity of hallmarked gold jewelry goods with HUID numbers by utilizing the verify HUID feature in the BIS CARE app, which can be downloaded from the play store.
