Wheat export limitations are being eased by the government

The Commerce and Industry Ministry said on May 17 that the Centre has relaxed its May 13 wheat export embargo order to enable export consignments that were registered in the Customs Department’s systems and handed over for examination on or before May 13.

Following a request by the Egyptian government, the administration also allowed a wheat consignment bound for Egypt to continue loading at the Kandla port. The majority of the 61,500 metric tonnes of wheat had already been loaded for shipment to Egypt. The government has now given the exporter permission to load the remaining 17,160 metric tonnes, allowing the entire shipment to leave Kandla.

Ministry reiterated the goal of last week’s ban order (Wheat export ban)

The Ministry reiterated the goal of last week’s ban order, saying it will ensure food security and contain inflation while retaining India’s credibility as a supplier by assisting other nations with food shortages. The decree also aimed to provide the wheat market with a clear direction in order to avoid wheat stocks from being hoarded, according to the Ministry.

The export restrictions were announced just a few days after the Ministry announced that official delegations will go to many countries to promote Indian wheat exports.

The restrictions would not apply in cases when private trade has made prior commitments via a Letter of Credit, or when the Centre grants authority to other nations to meet their food security needs at the request of their governments.
